Mum of woman murdered in Arima wants thorough investigation
The mother of Rianna Mohammed, who was murdered in Arima on Wednesday night, is calling for a thorough investigation into her first-born and only daughter’s killing. Police reported that at about 10 pm, Mohammed was at Bolo Trace, Hoyte Avenue with a 37-year-old man when they were shot at. Mohammed, 26, who is originally from Freeport, collapsed and died on the spot. The man, who lives at Chatham Village, Chatham, was grazed in the neck. Police said they have no motive for the killing. 6 scrap iron men arrested overnight
Six scrap iron workers have been arrested overnight, as vanloads of protesters used the cover of darkness to block parts of Claxton Bay and environs. A heavy contingent of army and police remains stationed in the area following four days of protests, which spilt onto the busy Solomon Hochoy Highway, inconveniencing hundreds of people. The protests are occurring during the visit of Guyanese President Dr Irfaan Ali, who is in Trinidad on business. There are 107 scrap iron dealers in Claxton Bay who own vehicles that collect old metal including copper from across the country. Pointe-a-Pierre MP David Lee says this accounts for 50 per cent of all scrap metal exports in Trinidad. Read more here

T&T, Guyana join forces to help reduce food import bills
A food production initiative between Guyana and Trinidad and Tobago will allow both countries to significantly reduce their food import bills. This, according to leaders of both countries - Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley and Guyana President Dr Irfaan Ali. The two were speaking at a press conference at the Diplomatic Centre in St Ann’s yesterday, after Ali participated in a wreath-laying ceremony in Memorial Park, Port-of-Spain. As they announced the joint initiative, both were asked just how much this programme would assist in reducing food imports for their respective countries. Read more here

Tremendous opportunities for Guyana, T&T
President, Dr. Irfaan Ali, on Thursday, said there are tremendous opportunities for Guyana and Trinidad and Tobago through strategic collaboration on energy. The Head of State made these remarks during a joint press conference with Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago, Dr. Keith Rowley on Thursday. President Ali is currently in the twin-island republic on a State visit. He is accompanied by a local delegation that includes several ministers of Government. During this joint media engagement, President Ali underscored the need for strategic collaboration in the energy sector to ensure energy sustainability and security in the region. “We want a strategic approach on integrating our advantages that we have, in building out a sound path towards energy sustainability, resilience and reliance for the region and this is a big part of our agenda with the US,” President Ali said. Europe storms: Children among dead in France, Austria and Italy
Powerful storms have battered areas of central and southern Europe, killing at least 12 people including three children. The deaths, most from falling trees, were reported in Italy and Austria, and on the French island of Corsica. Heavy rain and winds wrecked campsites on the island, while in Venice, Italy, masonry was blown off the belltower of St Mark's Basilica. The storms follow weeks of heatwave and drought across much of the continent. In Corsica, winds gusting up to 224 km/h (140mph) uprooted trees and damaged mobile homes. Authorities there said a 13-year-old girl was killed by a falling tree on a campsite. Read more here
