Commission of Enquiry into $500M acquisition for highway
Cabinet will initiate a commission of enquiry to examine the circumstances in which over $500 million was paid to homeowners to acquire land for the extension of the highway from San Fernando to Point Fortin. The announcement was made by Minister of Communications, National Security and Minister in the Office of the Prime Minister, Stuart Young at Thursday's post-Cabinet news conference. The commission will be asked to determine whether criminal or civil proceedings should be brought against those involved, including a Cabinet committee headed by former Prime minister Kama Persad-Bissessar. 98 athletes in T&T Pan Am team
Ninety-eight (98) athletes from eighteen (18) sporting disciplines, along with 50 officials, will head to Lima, Peru, to represent Trinidad and Tobago at the 2019 Pan American Games from July 26th to August 11th. Diane Henderson was named the Chef de Mission of the contingent that comprises 58 male and 40 female athletes. Jack: I’m not liable to pay US$79
Corruption-accused former FIFA vice-president Jack Warner says he is not liable to pay US$79 million in damages, which was ordered by a United States judge in a Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football (Concacaf) lawsuit. Triston Bonterre, corporate secretary, legal and compliance officer of the Warner Group of Companies, issued a news release yesterday stating that Warner “categorically denies that he is liable for any of the sums, which comprise part of these default judgments”. Bajans blow away T&T
Jaden Leacock’s seven-wicket haul blew away T&T in the penultimate round of the Regional Under-17 tournament at the National Cricket Centre in Balmain, Couva, yesterday. Barbados won the toss and elected to field first and their bowlers ran through T&T’s batting order. The local team had half of its battsmen back in the pavilion with 34 runs on the board. Isiah Gomez’s 18 was the highest of the innings for T&T while Tariq Mohammed made 15. Click here for more
J’cans Illegally In US Warned To Have Lawyers On Hand - ICE Gearing Up To Deport Thousands Of Undocumented Immigrants Starting Weekend
Jamaicans living illegally in the United States are being advised by New York-based immigration attorney Millicent Clarke to have a lawyer’s number on speed dial as they could quickly find themselves on a plane back home if a US government-planned operation gets under way this weekend. A similar operation was to take place last month, but US President Donald Trump postponed it. The operation, which has caused outrage among immigrant-rights advocates, is expected to target persons with final deportation orders, including families whose cases were fast-tracked by judges in 10 major cities, including Chicago, New York, Los Angeles and Miami. Thomas Cook in £750m rescue deal talks
Troubled travel company Thomas Cook is in £750m rescue talks with banks and its largest shareholder, Fosun. The measures, which have not been finalised, would see the Chinese investor buy the firm's tour business. Thomas Cook's chief executive, Peter Fankhauser, said the proposal was "not the outcome any of us wanted" but insisted it was "pragmatic”. He told the BBC that customers did not need to worry because their holiday bookings were "secure". Click here for more
