Two Trini pupils head to science camp in US
TWO Trinidadian pupils are off to the US this week to participate in the National Youth Science Camp 2019. The US Embassy in Port of Spain, in collaboration with the National Institute of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology (NIHERST), announced the pupils as Teveer Balraj of Naparima College and Sarah Berment of Holy Name Convent. Claxton Bay man gets $1 m after false charges
For the third time in less than two years, taxpayers have been forced to compensate a man from Claxton Bay, who claimed to have been repeatedly targeted by a group of police officers.
Mark Victor Hagley, of Southern Main Road, Claxton Bay, received his latest award on Thursday as High Court Master Sherlanne Pierre granted him $200,000 in compensation over an incident in 2010. Read more here…

No back-pay for former MPs, judges and presidents
THERE will be no back-pay for former ministers and MPs, retired judges, presidents and prime ministers. In order to prevent any expectation of back-pay or retroactivity by the beneficiaries of increased pensions, an amendment to the Miscellaneous Provisions (Pensions) Act was tabled and passed by the House of Representatives on Wednesday night. Foreign operator will likely get nod for refinery—Khan
Petrotrin's Pointe-a-Pierre Refinery, now called Guaracara Refining Company Ltd, will "most likely" be leased to a foreign operator, Energy Minister Franklin Khan.
He was speaking at a PNM meeting in Point Fortin on Thursday night under the theme Let's Talk Energy.
"Guaracara Refining and terminalling (storage) facilities is very likely to be leased to a private operator. Very likely, an international operator because there is no indigenous capacity to run a refinery of that size and complexity. We will be focusing on Heritage," Khan said. Read more here…

G20 summit: Trump jokes to Putin about Russian election meddling
A smirking Mr Trump wagged his finger at the Russian president and said: "Don't meddle in the election, please." The pair were holding talks on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Japan.
It was their first meeting since Robert Mueller concluded his investigation into alleged Russian interference in the 2016 US presidential election.
US intelligence agencies concluded that Russia was behind an effort to influence the presidential election with a state-authorised campaign of cyber-attacks and fake news stories planted on social media. Read more here…
European heatwave: Record temperatures 'claim lives'
France may hit its highest-ever recorded temperature on Friday in the heatwave that has swept across the continent this week.
The current record is 44.1C (111.4F) - measured during a heatwave in 2003 which killed thousands of people.
