Pensioner beaten, robbed in Arima
A 68-year-old man was beaten and robbed while at his Arima home on Saturday afternoon. Police said the man was at home off the Churchill Roosevelt Highway, Arima, at around 2.50 pm when three gunmen walked into his yard and announced a robbery. The bandits beat the man and tied his hands and feet with electrical cords. The men stole his cellphone, television set and his white Nissan Bluebird Sylphy. The man eventually freed himself and called the police. Officers from the Arima CID are continuing enquiries. Read more here

MSJ tells Government: Address white-collar crime
Movement for Social Justice (MSJ) leader David Abdulah says crime is out of control so much so police have resorted to seeking devine intervention to fight crime. He said the authorities much first deal with white-collar crimes if they are to get a grip on violent crimes such as human trafficking, drug trafficking, and the guns and ammunition trade. Abdulah was speaking at the MSJ's virtual media conference on Sunday. He called for "strong action" to deal with white-collar crimes like corruption and money laundering. He also identified several measures the party believes should be addressed in the 2022/2023 budget presentation on September 26, saying the country was not sure if the Government would allocate the money wisely. Charles wants mandatory body cams for cops ... also slams CJ for Judiciary’s incompetence, slowness
United National Congress whip David Lee is calling for mandatory body cameras for all members of the T&T Police Service. “Twenty-two citizens who were alive on the day the Prime Minister left T&T are now murdered. An additional six were killed by police. Our murder rate now stands at 410 (compared to 265 this time last year) on track for this year recording the most murders in our history,” Charles said at a media conference at the Office of the Opposition in Port-of-Spain, yesterday. “UNC is calling for immediate mandatory use of body cameras for all 10,000 police officers - at least those thousands in frontline operations.” Read more here

Young girls trained for technologically sophisticated jobs
IN an effort to assist women in taking up positions in technology and solutions-based coding and problem-solving, Trifinity Solutions Inc. recently teamed up with the Commonwealth of Learning (COL) to host its inaugural “Code-Her” workshop at the University of Guyana and via Zoom. The Code-Her project came to an end following one month of activities, including the hybrid workshop, a virtual stakeholders’ engagement forum, and the launching of a web development workbook. The workshop, attended by 30 in-person participants and more than 120 young women on Zoom, enabled Trifinity, a digital media agency, to showcase its passion for creating more opportunities for girls to ‘code’ and to empower women. Ukraine war: Shock and joy in newly liberated villages
Natalia's face lights up as she recalls the moment of her liberation - when the hated occupiers were forced from her village, Novovoznesenske, in the southern region of Kherson. She farmed there in peace and quiet until the Russians arrived on 29 March. What they did not destroy, they stole, she says, including forks and spoons, and the shoes from a pensioner's feet. "They were a rabble," she tells me, wringing her hands as she relives her trauma. Freedom finally came on 2 September. "When our armed forces arrived, we were in the basement," says the 50-year-old. "They asked, in Ukrainian, 'is anyone alive?' and I realised they were ours. They were so handsome, so beautiful especially compared to the fascists [her term for Russian forces]. Read more here
