Plea for legal aid for 20-year old who chopped off abusive man’s hand

Relatives of the 20-year -old woman who is in police custody for chopping off the hand of a male relative in Barrackpore during a domestic dispute last Friday, is seeking legal aid for her. Her sister told Newsday on Sunday, she has no idea if the young woman has been charged or for what crime. She said the police are not giving them any information, neither does the family know where she is being detained. She said their situation is really pitiful as all three are related. She said they urgently need the counsel of an attorney to assist them as they are not in a financial position to afford one. Police said they will consult with the Director of Public Prosecutions before laying charges. Read more here

Pensioner begs for help after roof blows off

79-year-old retiree, Ignatius Phillip Cummings is pleading for assistance after the roof of his home blew off last week during heavy winds. “I was in the yard when the breeze blew and the roof just stood straight up and then it just dropped on the other side of the house. When the rain came down all the beds and appliances that I had inside there get wet. Couch, bed and other things,” Cummings said. Cummings has lived at his on Trinity Road, Guayaguayare, for decades, moving there from Moruga when he was just 25 years old. When Guardian Media visited, he was surrounded by his grandchildren who usually come to visit during the vacation period, but this year he has nowhere for them to stay. Read more here

PM meets service chiefs, announces new police unit

THE Prime Minister  met with security chiefs on Sunday in a four-hour-long meeting at the Diplomatic Centre, St Ann's. The public was alerted to the meeting by a post on Dr Rowley's official Facebook page as well as that of the Office of the Prime Minister, just after 1 pm. The post said he was chairing a high-profile meeting which included Police Commissioner Erla Harewood-Christopher, divisional commanders, National Security Minister Fitzgerald Hinds and Energy Minister Stuart Young. By 5 pm, the page was updated to include acting Chief of Defence Staff, Brig Gen Dexter Francis, the director of the SSA and the executive members of the police service. Parents look for bargains ahead of new school term

Parents are already getting an early start on preparations for the new school term in September. On Friday, there was a flurry of activity at Port of Spain bookstores and several hole-in-the-wall establishments, where eager parents armed with booklists were looking for used-book bargains. Last year, following the cries of parents who complained that the prices of schoolbooks were too high, the Ministry of Education stated that there should be no changes to the list of textbooks as issued in academic year 2022-2023 for the new academic year 2023-2024. Thousands of jobs created through foreign direct investments

As Guyana maintains its position as the leading Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) destination in the Caribbean, President, Dr Irfaan Ali has said that this has led to the creation thousands of jobs here. The Head of State was at the time responding to questions from the Guyana Chronicle at a recent press conference where he said that the direct and indirect benefits of these investments in Guyana are the jobs that are created. He indicated that for example, there are currently a number of hotels under construction which has created multiple jobs, which puts more disposable income in the hands of more families in the country. Added to this, he said more companies such as call centres have increased their capacity by thousands, which adds more individual, community and national wealth and has increased spending. Kerch bridge is hated symbol of Russian occupation

Ukrainian officials are maintaining their customary ambiguity about the latest attack on the Kerch bridge, but its location and strategic significance mean it was always likely to come under renewed assault. With Kyiv's counter-offensive aiming to deal a decisive blow to Russian forces occupying southern Ukraine, the bridge is a key target. There aren't many ways for Moscow to reinforce its troops in Crimea and the southern Kherson region. The Kerch bridge is one of the most important. If the bridge is out of action, even for a short time, this will complicate Russia's logistical challenges, a key aspect of the early phase of Ukraine's counter-offensive. Read more here
