Supermarkets not ‘price setters’
With the rising cost of food prices, the Supermarket Association president Rajiv Diptee is making it clear that they are not “price setters” but “price takers.” In a statement e-mailed to Newsday on Friday, Diptee said, “The retail food industry has noted with great consternation the rising costs of doing business coupled with decreasing revenues, higher overheads in terms of rents, utilities and taxes, flat sales in what is a worryingly stagnant consumer environment and an increasingly difficult labour environment in terms of the pool of labour and the application of those laws as they apply to labour.” Read more here
‘No hiccups’ for motorists with new traffic flow
Minister of Works and Transport Rohan Sinanan said motorists traversing areas where the Curepe Interchange is being constructed should not experience any issues with regards to the traffic changes which take effect today. On Friday it was announced that a new traffic flow of the Southern Main Road in the vicinity of the Curepe Intersection will take effect. But up to yesterday, there seemed to be a lot of work still to be done. When Guardian Media contacted Minister Sinanan he said that “everything was in place” for the new traffic flow. Read more here

PM calls in Defence Force to manage community pool
Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley said the Defence Force had to be called in to manage and guard the new Laventille Community Swimming Pool. Yesterday the Prime Minister officially opened the $4.9 million dollar facility which will be called the Sogren Trace Swim Club. He said the Defence Force had to manage the swimming pool facility to ensure it is not misused or poorly maintained. Read more here

Erdogan likes to say 'whoever wins Istanbul, wins Turkey.' His party's defeat is a crushing blow
Change, hope, and a new beginning. That's the promise of Istanbul's newly elected mayor Ekrem Imamoglu. His slogan, "Everything will be great," is on everyone's lips in Turkey. Imamoglu's win in the repeat of the mayoral vote invigorates Turkey's fatigued opposition. It breathes new life into a part of the Turkish electorate that had lost all hope of a victory at the ballot box, but still believed in safeguarding the country's democracy. The revote was less about the office of the mayor and more about the question of whether or not the most basic and indisputable part of the democratic process, the ballot box, would survive the tenure of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
