Boy, 16, stabbed in San Fernando

A 16-year-old boy has been hospitalised after a stabbing incident near the C3 Shopping Mall in Corinth on November 30. According to police reports, the boy was with a group of friends near the mall when they were approached by a group of people. The boy was pushed to the ground by a member of this group and felt a pain to the back of his neck. He managed to escape and the police were alerted. Read more here

Public sector doctors start petition calling for salary hike, safe conditions

The Northwest Doctors Association (NWDA) along with public sector doctors from other regions are petitioning for better salaries and working conditions. A petition which is circulating online highlights “deep concerns” regarding what they say are ongoing issues surrounding salaries, working conditions, and the professional and personal welfare of doctors. They say the last increase was in 2015. There were over 1,300 signatures up to late last evening. Read more here

Patriotic Front: Humanity, responsibility needed on migrant issue

Patriotic Front political leader Mickela Panday says humanity and responsibility are necessary elements of any solution to the issue of Venezuelan migrants coming to Trinidad and Tobago to escape challenges they are experiencing in their own nation. In a statement on November 29, Panday said, "We believe that it is our moral duty to approach this situation with compassion while safeguarding the welfare and security of our citizens." IDB reports 2% growth in C’bean remittances

The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) says Caribbean countries will receive US$18.4 billion in remittances, with a 2% growth, similar to that observed in 2023. The IDB is projecting that remittances to countries in Latin America and the Caribbean will reach a historic high in 2024 despite growing at their slowest pace in ten years. Read more here

Food sustainability project set for Eteringbang

In an effort to bolster food security and promote sustainable agriculture in Eteringbang, Region Seven, President, Dr Irfaan Ali has announced plans to develop some 20 acres of farmland. During a recent community engagement, the Head of State said this initiative will be designed to empower the hinterland community and ensure a reliable food supply. “To ensure your food-sustainability plan for the community, we are going to work with the ministry of agriculture on developing 20 acres of farmland,” President Ali said before highlighting government’s commitment to investing in local agricultural capabilities. Trump threatens 100% tariff on Brics nations if they try to replace dollar

US President-elect Donald Trump has threatened to impose 100% tariffs on a bloc of nine nations if they were to create a rival currency to the US dollar. "The idea that the BRICS Countries are trying to move away from the Dollar while we stand by and watch is OVER," Trump wrote on social media on Saturday. Major world powers China and Russia are part of the Brics alliance, along with Brazil, India, South Africa, Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia and the United Arab Emirates. During the US election, Trump campaigned on implementing widespread tariffs. He has escalated threats of steep levies in recent days. Read more here
