Tobago teens get advice on studying abroad
Students interested in studying abroad were given crucial advice on Wednesday as Study Abroad Student Services (SASS) hosted UniFest Tobago College and University Fair 2022 at the Shaw Park Complex. SASS founder and managing director Esther Jones told Newsday the organisation helps fill the information gap for students and parents. SASS's objective is to assist Caribbean/international students seeking to study abroad in tertiary institutions. Read more here
Homeowners angry after more flood losses
There were calls for urgent measures to alleviate flooding yesterday, as several parts of the country were inundated by floodwaters, leaving hundreds of residents marooned in their homes. Mayaro MP Rushton Paray said repeated floods in the Mayaro communities and other parts of the country demanded immediate and extensive action from the Drainage Division of the Ministry of Works and Transport. “Minister Rohan Sinanan must direct the division to urgently initiate measures for a speedy runoff of the overflowing watercourses and remedial steps to avert further floods,” Paray said in a press release yesterday. Noting that rivers and tributaries in the Mayaro constituency were all extremely close to full capacity, he said further rainfall could cause an overflow of riverbanks. Read more here

Gopee-Scoon tells investment forum: Caribbean the place to do business
Minister of Trade and Industry Paula Gopee-Scoon says the Caribbean is eager to attract investment from global companies while strengthening trade relations among regional partners. This is the second investment forum for the year, with the first being held in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. A virtual investment forum was held in Trinidad last year. Speaking during the welcome reception of the Caribbean Investment Forum at the Hyatt Regency Hotel, Port of Spain, on Tuesday night, Gopee-Scoon thanked the participants for their interest in the event and emphasised the value of such activities in promoting growth in different sectors. Hinds, Moonilal spar over FUL recommendation in JSC
Former police commissioner Gary Griffith is accusing Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley, National Security Minister Fitzgerald Hinds and acting Police Commissioner McDonald Jacob of being hypocrites. His accusation came yesterday in response to Hinds’ denying that he ever recommended be granted a Firearm Users Licence (FUL) during a Joint Select Committee (JSC). During the meeting, Hinds was asked by committee member Dr Roodal Moonilal whether the Prime Minister, Ministers and MPs should be barred from recommending individuals for FULs. Moonilal’s statements were hotly refuted and he eventually chose to move on from the question. However, before the meeting ended, Moonilal again raised the question, this time telling Hinds, “Earlier, I asked the question on the policy issue on whether Ministers ought to be recommending persons for FUL. You indicated then you had no recollection of recommending persons. Minister, I am inviting you to reflect on that and correct yourself.” Read more here

Caribbean Investment Forum attracts ‘overwhelming’ response
Executive director of the Caribbean Export Development Agency, Deodat Maharaj, said yesterday that the response to the Caribbean Investment Forum has been “overwhelming.” Speaking yesterday at the opening of the Forum, Maharaj said the conference organisers had to close registration on Tuesday because “we were already way over 600 participants who are overwhelmingly businesses and investors.” Read more here

Ukraine war: US estimates 200,000 military casualties on all sides
The most senior US general estimates that around 100,000 Russian and 100,000 Ukrainian soldiers have been killed or injured in the war in Ukraine. Gen Mark Milley, chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, also suggested that around 40,000 civilians had died after being caught up in the conflict. The estimates are the highest offered yet by a Western official. He also said that signs Kyiv was willing to re-enter talks with Moscow offered "a window" for negotiations. Read more here
