Chief Justice Ivor Archie has rebuffed Justice Carol Gobin, telling her there was no “settled or unvarying practice” of consulting someone before assigning judges to any court.

He recalled that during his time as a judge he was assigned all over the place and never questioned the assignor or the assignment because he recognised that he had a duty to the judiciary to go wherever he was sent. Read more here…

 

National Geographic crew amazed by local ecosystem

A production team from National Geographic Travellers was left stunned by the wide diversity of the ecosystems in Tobago. During their final day of filming, last Friday, in phase two of a marketing initiative by the Tobago Tourism Agency Ltd (TTAL), the production team expressed amazement that a small island like Tobago housed up to 240 species of birds, 640 species of plants and 160 tree species. They also appreciated how easily accessible the island's ecosystems, popular attractions and historical sites are for locals and visitors. Read more here…

UNC opens door on bail bill

Drop­ping the “net” on crim­i­nals by re­strict­ing bail ac­cess. That’s what Gov­ern­ment hopes to achieve with to­mor­row’s de­bate on the Bail (Amend­ment) bill for which Par­lia­ment has been re­called fol­low­ing the re­cent crime cri­sis.

“Pas­sage of this bill is cru­cial at this point as the Po­lice Com­mis­sion­er ap­proached Gov­ern­ment in the week of Ju­ly 15 say­ing now is the time to have the bill passed ur­gent­ly as part of the strat­e­gy of de­stroy­ing the re­cent up­surge in crim­i­nal ac­tiv­i­ty,”

No JP at Sando court, all alleged offenders kept in custody

All al­leged of­fend­ers in cus­tody ap­pear­ing in the San Fer­nan­do Mag­is­trates’ Court were re­mand­ed to the prison yes­ter­day be­cause there was no Jus­tice of the Peace (JP) to ap­prove their bail doc­u­ments.

A no­tice post­ed at the cour­t­house stat­ed, “Please note that to­day Mon­day 29th Ju­ly 2019 Clerk of the Peace ser­vices at the San Fer­nan­do Mag­is­trates’ Court (old) will not be avail­able. We apol­o­gise for any in­con­ve­nience.” Read more here…

CariCRIS gives Sagicor bond A

THE CARIBBEAN credit rating agency, CariCRIS yesterday assigned an initial credit ratings of CariAA (Foreign and Local Currency Ratings) on its regional rating scale and jmAAA on the Jamaica national scale, to the proposed debt issue of Sagicor Financial Corporation Ltd (SFC) of up to US$76 million or the Jamaican Dollar equivalent. Angela Brown Burke Now Bunting's Campaign Director

Bunting's Rise United Campaign made the announcement in a midnight news release. It coincided with public comments following the leaking of a letter by Brown Burke's husband Paul Burke, a former PNP general secretary, who said his wife deceived him by deciding to support Bunting.

Mr Burke, who is supporting incumbent Dr Peter Phillips, said, although it's his wife's right to support whoever she chooses, claimed she had consistently said she was not in favour of Bunting. Read more here…

Capital One data breach: Arrest after details of 106m people stolen

The alleged hacker, Paige Thompson, was arrested on Monday after reportedly boasting about the breach online.

Capital One said the data included names, addresses and phone numbers of people who applied for its products.

But the hacker did not gain access to credit card account numbers, it said. The data breach is believed to be one of the largest in banking history. Read more here…
