Chief Justice Ivor Archie has rebuffed Justice Carol Gobin, telling her there was no “settled or unvarying practice” of consulting someone before assigning judges to any court.
He recalled that during his time as a judge he was assigned all over the place and never questioned the assignor or the assignment because he recognised that he had a duty to the judiciary to go wherever he was sent. Read more here…
National Geographic crew amazed by local ecosystem
A production team from National Geographic Travellers was left stunned by the wide diversity of the ecosystems in Tobago. During their final day of filming, last Friday, in phase two of a marketing initiative by the Tobago Tourism Agency Ltd (TTAL), the production team expressed amazement that a small island like Tobago housed up to 240 species of birds, 640 species of plants and 160 tree species. They also appreciated how easily accessible the island's ecosystems, popular attractions and historical sites are for locals and visitors. Read more here…

UNC opens door on bail bill
Dropping the “net” on criminals by restricting bail access. That’s what Government hopes to achieve with tomorrow’s debate on the Bail (Amendment) bill for which Parliament has been recalled following the recent crime crisis.
“Passage of this bill is crucial at this point as the Police Commissioner approached Government in the week of July 15 saying now is the time to have the bill passed urgently as part of the strategy of destroying the recent upsurge in criminal activity,”

No JP at Sando court, all alleged offenders kept in custody
All alleged offenders in custody appearing in the San Fernando Magistrates’ Court were remanded to the prison yesterday because there was no Justice of the Peace (JP) to approve their bail documents.
A notice posted at the courthouse stated, “Please note that today Monday 29th July 2019 Clerk of the Peace services at the San Fernando Magistrates’ Court (old) will not be available. We apologise for any inconvenience.” Read more here…

Angela Brown Burke Now Bunting's Campaign Director
Bunting's Rise United Campaign made the announcement in a midnight news release. It coincided with public comments following the leaking of a letter by Brown Burke's husband Paul Burke, a former PNP general secretary, who said his wife deceived him by deciding to support Bunting.
Mr Burke, who is supporting incumbent Dr Peter Phillips, said, although it's his wife's right to support whoever she chooses, claimed she had consistently said she was not in favour of Bunting. Read more here…

Capital One data breach: Arrest after details of 106m people stolen
The alleged hacker, Paige Thompson, was arrested on Monday after reportedly boasting about the breach online.
Capital One said the data included names, addresses and phone numbers of people who applied for its products.
But the hacker did not gain access to credit card account numbers, it said. The data breach is believed to be one of the largest in banking history. Read more here…
