Gang targets MP for $ over road projects

A Gov­ern­ment min­is­ter pub­licly dis­closed on Monday that he had to seek po­lice pro­tec­tion af­ter a crim­i­nal gang threat­ened him so that he could help arrange a por­tion of a mul­ti-mil­lion dol­lar State con­tract in the Moru­ga dis­trict.

The dis­clo­sure by Lovell Fran­cis, a Min­is­ter in the Min­istry of Ed­u­ca­tion, came a few days af­ter the Prime Min­is­ter Dr Kei­th Row­ley as­sert­ed that gang lead­ers can ten­der for State con­tracts and it was the po­lice job to charge them for be­ing in­volved in crime. Read more here…

Motorists may face heavy traffic

MOTORISTS heading into Port of Spain and San Fernando today may encounter heavy traffic as protest action is expected to take place again at the three garbage dump sites at Beetham, Forres Park in Claxton Bay and Guanapo in Arima.

This was the promise made by Robert Benacia, who heads the Industrial, General and Sanitation Workers Union that represents the approximately 200 workers employed at the three dump sites. The workers are complaining about poor salaries and work conditions some said were, “hellish”. Read more here…

Less $$ from govt led to lay-off of 200

PAINTING a grim picture of the University of TT’s (UTT) financial position, acting chairman Professor Clement Imbert said the restructuring exercise which will see 200 non-academic staff being sent home, is to ensure the institution’s survival.

He said laying off the 200 which includes staff at the level of manager and above, will reduce its payroll by $2 million monthly. Already, four vice president positions as well as several other managerial-level positions have been removed from the structure. Read more here…

Khan rejects US claim TT helping Cuba get LPG

ENERGY Minister Franklin Khan yesterday rejected claims by US Senator Marco Rubio that the ministry is helping Cuba circumvent US sanctions against Venezuela

‘POLITICAL SABOTAGE’

PRIME Minister of Guyana, Moses Nagamootoo, said the call by the Opposition Leader, Bharrat Jagdeo, for a boycott of House-to-House Registration of citizens to create a new data base for a voters’ list, is a feeble attempt at sabotaging Guyana’s electoral process.
“No sensible politician would stand in the way of putting together a clean voters’ list that would include our voting age youths and all other eligible citizens who are domiciled in the country,” Prime Minister Nagamootoo told Guyana Chronicle on Monday. Read more here…

KSAMC Halts Scotiabank Centre Project Over Lack Of Permit

Local government authorities have confirmed that a cease order was issued on refurbishing operations at the Scotiabank Centre in downtown Kingston for breaches of the Building Act and code.

On Sunday, the chief executive officer at the Kingston and St Andrew Municipal Corporation (KSAMC), Robert Hill, confirmed that the corporation had instructed the institution to halt works roughly two weeks ago. Read more here…

Boris Johnson wins race to be Tory leader and PM

He beat Jeremy Hunt comfortably, winning 92,153 votes to his rival's 46,656.

The former London mayor takes over from Theresa May on Wednesday.

In his victory speech, Mr Johnson promised he would "deliver Brexit, unite the country and defeat Jeremy Corbyn". Read more here…

Trump, Pakistani PM talk Taliban, Afghan peace talks at White House

Washington (CNN)President Donald Trump said the US has made "a lot of progress" toward ending the war in Afghanistan in negotiations with the Taliban in recent weeks and made clear his disdain for the US' ongoing US military presence in Afghanistan.
